AMD takes aim at Intel with new Ryzen Threadripper Pro series

AMD Ryzen Chip

AMD is gunning for Intel's Xeon chips with the launch of its Ryzen Threadripper Pro series.

The new family of CPUs includes four models. These include the 64-core AMD Ryzen Threadripper Pro 3995WX, the 32-core Ryzen Threadripper Pro 3975WX, the 16-core Ryzen Threadripper Pro 3955WX, and the 12-core Ryzen Threadripper Pro 3945WX, all of which support simultaneous multithreading.

The Threadripper Pro 3995WX offers the performance of two Intel Xeon Platinum 8280 processors, according to AMD, while its 32-core Thredrpper 3975WX matches the Xeon W-3275. The chip manufacturer has also pitched the Threadripper Pro 3955WX against the Xeon W-2295 and the Threadripper Pro 3945WX against the Xeon W-3235.

AMD's 3995WX and the 3975WX CPUs feature slightly lower clocks in comparison to AMD's existing 64- and 32-core Ryzen Threadripper 3900-series products, but they are significantly faster than AMD's EPYC processors with the same core count.

All of AMD's Ryzen Threadripper Pro 3900WX-series processors support up to 2TB of DDR4 memory using various types of DRAM modules, which is an important capability for memory-intensive workloads like data analytics. These new CPUs also feature 128 PCIe lanes for high-end graphic cards, compute accelerators and storage devices.

The new chip series arrives at the same time as Lenovo's ThinkStation P620, the world's first 64-core Pro workstation. The ThinkStation P620 has been exclusively built on Ryzen Threadripper Pro processors and will be available in the autumn.

"Our customers need class-leading, innovative solutions to power through the most demanding applications," said Rob Herman, GM of workstation and client AI business unit at Lenovo.

"By leveraging the AMD Threadripper Pro Processors for our newest workstation, the ThinkStation P620, we can offer users the smarter solutions to create complex models, render photorealistic imagery or analyse geophysical and seismic interpretations, while offering crucial security and scalability features to ensure safe and effective operation for our professional users."
