Energy management and automation firm Schneider Electric has released two e-guides designed to support the IT industry in addressing the challenges and opportunities of edge computing.

Available for free to IT and data centre professionals, MSPs and VARs, the guides include research from Canalys, guidance from IT leaders, as well as insight gained by the company itself.

The first, titled ‘How to Capitalise on the Edge Computing Opportunity”, takes an in-depth look at Canalys’ primary research of over 350 IT channel respondents on edge computing opportunities and challenges.

The guide delves into key findings such as the priority vertical industries for Internet of Things systems, of which include healthcare (37%), manufacturing (33%) and industrial (23%). It also notes key statistics such as 75% of channel partners reporting down time as being detrimental to business, alongside most IT providers citing remote site management, physical security and standardised deployment as either important or very important.

As well as laying out the figures, the guide also provides a roadmap to help identify and implement physical infrastructure to enable edge computing projects.

The second e-guide – titled “Buyers Guide to Edge Infrastructure Management” – looks into the value of edge management and the steps IT and data centre professionals should take before buying and deploying a system.

Designed to help enterprises of all sizes, the guide provides support in self-assessing whether there is a need for an edge infrastructure management system, and helps map the business requirement to it if there is.

It also includes support in assembling the right team of experts with appropriate skillsets and building a business action plan, Schneider Electric said.

"Our reliance on digital experiences is ever-increasing, changing how we personally interact with each other and the companies with whom we do business,” commented Jamie Bourassa, VP IT Channel Strategy at Schneider Electric. “A digital customer experience is now a business imperative and IT professionals – from end users to VARs and MSPs -- are navigating a complex new hybrid IT world.

"We have developed these guides, along with tools and other resources, to remove some of the complexity from the process of developing a unique edge computing strategy."

Both e-guides are available for free now on APC.com and SE.com.
